Sustainable fishing with The Atlantic Seafood Company The Atlantic Seafood Company (Gambia) Ltd., as subsidiary of Network Seafood B.V., was established in 2004 by Michel Huijser, a Dutch Entrepreneur, who was looking for new opportunities in The Gambia, West Africa. After visiting and being involved in the development of The Gambia for over 10 years, the founder discovered a great potential in the sustainable fishing industry, which was very much undeveloped at that time in The Gambia. Michel Huijser decided to invest in the fishing industry together with GIPFZA (The Gambia Investment Promotion and Free zones Agency), together they made a plan to upgrade the standard of the fishing industry in The Gambia to the highest level. After having rented a factory in 2004 for 1 year and having tasted from the potential of the fishing industry in The Gambia, the plan was made to build up a brand new factory.
In the beginning of 2006 the operation started in the new factory, which has been marked by several quality controllers from the EU as the role model for Africa. We started to export the brand The Atlantic Seafood Company, to The Netherlands, Belgium Germany, France, UK, Spain and S-Africa, where the potential is still increasing.
The brand The Atlantic Seafood Company stands for the best quality of frozen sustainable seafood from Africa, but in the same sentence it stands for development and improvement of The Gambia and their people as well. During the past years we are on daily basis working together with 60 staff members in our factory, together with an extra temporary staff of 60/70 people when the quantity is requiring this, we are also working with over 400 Cano’s, employing at least another 1500 people in this country, which is still of one the poorest in Africa.
We are continuously watching how to make our organization and production more sustainable. People 4 Earth in this case is giving us their moral support in how to improve these things even further. This way we are now thinking for instance, of investing in a fish flower plant, making sure that everything of the fish is being used and no waste is being produced. This of course amongst other things like looking at power supply, etc.
